Shipping on the River Teign
Shipping on the River Teign Collection
Teignmouth & Shaldon have a long maritime history of fishing and shipbuilding.
- West Teignmouth was one of the major ports on the south-west coast in the 14th century and responded to the King’s request for ships for the invasion of France
- the Morgan Giles shipyard 1921-1968 built over 1,000 boats, from racing yachts to Admiralty vessels and luxury motor cruisers
Admiral Pellew
Telling the story of when Admiral Pellew's fleet of English and Dutch ships defeated the Dey of Algiers, rescuing European fishermen from ransom and slavery.
This collection includes his flag from the Battle of Algiers (1816).
Admiral Pellew was the inspiration for C. S. Forester’s Hornblower character.
Church House Rocks Wreck Collection
The Church Rocks Wreck
The remains of a 16th-century Venetian vessel, which was found by Simon Burton whilst diving off the beach at Teignmouth in 1975.
This fascinating collection includes a cannon, a swivel gun, the original ship’s timbers, and several cannonballs.

Donald Crowhurst
The story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst’s ill-fated attempt at the 1968 Golden Globe Yacht Race when he mysteriously disappeared.

A fashionable seaside resort
Initially Teignmouth was a fashionable resort and retirement location for wealthy people and then, with the coming of the railway in 1846, middle and working class people were able to come and enjoy a seaside holiday in Teignmouth or Shaldon.
