The 14 Teignmouth men who fought in the battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 were:

  • James Arscott, aged 21, Master’s Mate, ‘Temeraire’
  • Josh Bishop, aged 22, Caulker’s Mate, ‘Achille’
  • Park Blacklock, aged 25, Quartermaster, ‘Colossus’
  • George Brown, aged 28, Ordinary Seaman, ‘Conqueror’ (killed)
  • John Collins, aged 27, Able Seaman, ‘Ajax’
  • Thomas Corsley, aged 29, Able Seaman, ‘Defiance’
  • Stephen Edwards, aged 24, Able Seaman, ‘Achille,’ (wounded)
  • Richard Gay, aged 25, Able Seaman, ‘Belleisle’, (wounded)
  • William Kay, aged 23, Ordinary Seaman, ‘Spartiate’
  • George Richards, aged 44, Ordinary Seaman, ‘Ajax’
  • Charles Squarey, aged 26, Lieutenant, ‘Polyphemus’
  • Abraham Sweet, aged 32, Ordinary Seaman, ‘Spartiate’
  • William Tibbs, aged 23, Carpenter, ‘Temeraire’
  • Daniel Walker, aged 27, Royal Marine Private, ‘Conqueror’.

At least four others, while not Teignmouth born, came to retire here, including one of the Trafalgar heroes, James (Jack) Spratt.

The Battle of Trafalgar was celebrated at ‘The Ship Inn’ on the weekend starting Friday 21st October 2005- the 200th Anniversary of the battle.
